The new Derby Field at Wellington International South is designed to deliver an exceptional natural grass surface for horses and athletes while creating an unforgettable setting for equestrian sport. In a new behind-the-scenes video, internationally renowned equestrian surface designer Richard Hayden, principal consultant at Hayden Turfcare, explains the research, engineering and innovation behind the field. With experience spanning approximately 1,000 projects in 52 countries, Hayden was engaged by Wellington Lifestyle Partners President Paige Bellissimo in 2024 with a clear objective: to create a best-in-class natural-grass arena capable of performing at the highest level year-round.
A New Standard for Natural Grass Footing
The Derby Field at Wellington International South’s surface was carefully engineered to provide the correct level of hoof penetration and displacement. Rather than returning excessive energy to the horse, the soil profile allows energy to move through the surface and into the layers below. The result is intended to create a more comfortable and responsive experience for horses while supporting the technical demands of equestrian competition. According to Hayden, the surface may also give course designers new opportunities to challenge athletes. “When course designers come here and see this, it’s going to excite them,” he explained. “They’re going to try things that maybe weren’t possible at the old Derby Field.”
Engineered for South Florida Weather
Managing water was one of the most important considerations in the design of the new Derby Field. Wellington, Florida, can experience significant rainfall in a short period, making exceptional drainage essential to maintaining a reliable competition surface. Beneath the field, a specialized attenuation cell system is designed to manage water from a one-in-100-year storm event. Water collects in the underground system before moving through large infrastructure pipes around the perimeter of the field, gradually reaching the designated outlet. The field is also prepared for extended periods of dry weather. A state-of-the-art irrigation system can distribute approximately two inches of water in about 15 minutes. Together, these drainage and irrigation systems allow the Derby Field to respond to changing conditions and support year-round use.
A Custom Soil and Grass Profile
No two natural grass arenas designed by Hayden Turfcare are exactly alike. Each surface is customized to its location, climate and intended use. For the Wellington International South Derby Field, the team harvested topsoil directly from carefully selected areas of the property. Following extensive analysis, the soil was screened, blended and enhanced with specific amendments to achieve the desired performance.
The field was then sprigged with hybrid Bermuda grass rather than established using traditional sod. This method helps prevent the creation of a thick, spongy layer at the surface, allowing the horse’s hoof to engage more directly with the soil profile beneath the grass. Hybrid Bermuda grass provides strength, resilience and strong recovery during South Florida’s warmer months. It also provides a stable foundation for the winter grass to be overseeded each November. The two grass varieties are designed to work together to maintain the field across seasons.
Creating a Centerpiece for Wellington International South
The Derby Field is being maintained as though it were already hosting a competition, giving the turfcare team the opportunity to evaluate its performance and refine maintenance practices before the Winter Equestrian Festival begins. Surrounded by landscaping, the field will serve as both a competition arena and a gathering place for the community. “In terms of jumping on grass, it’s the spectacle,” Hayden said. “It’s the atmosphere. It’s a different event.”
